What is YUVIKA program?
The YUVIKA program, short form “YUva Vlgyani KAryakram” (Young Scientist Program), is an initiative launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to foster scientific curiosity and nurture young talents in the field of space science. The primary aim of the YUVIKA program is to encourage students to pursue careers in space technology and related fields by providing them with an early exposure to space science.
When and where was YUVIKA program launched?
The YUVIKA (Young Scientist Programme) was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on May 16, 2019, at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The Program is aimed at creating awareness among school students and space science and technology, encouraging them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). It targets young students to provide them with practical knowledge and exposure to space-related fields.
Who is eligible for YUVIKA program?
Students who are currently studying in 9th standard (or equivalent) in India are eligible to apply. The student must be an Indian citizen. Students with strong academic background and active participation in extracurricular activities will have a better chance of getting selected.
How to get selected for YUVIKA program?
ISRO selects students based on a weightage system that considers various factors. The following components play a role :
- 8th – grade academic performance (most weightage).
- Maintain a strong academic record, especially in science and mathematics subjects.
- Participation in Science Fair (school / district / state / national level)
- Prizes in Olympaids / Science competitions (school / district / state / national level)
- Participation in extra-curricular activities (sports, fine arts, etc.).
- Membership or participation in Scouts and Guides / NCC / NSS.
- Involvement in rural schools will receive some preference.
- Keep all certificates and documents ready to support your acievements and participation.
By focusing on academic performance and staying active in various STEM (science / technology / engineering / mathematics) related activities, you can increase your chances of being selected for the YUVIKA program.
How many students get selected for YUVIKA program?
The YUVIKA (Young Scientist Program) by ISRO selects approximately 150 students from accross India each year. These students are chosen from different states and union territories, with consideration for academic performance, extracurricular acievements and participation in science-related activities.The selected students get the opportunity to visit ISRO centres, engage in hands-on science activities, and interact with space scientists during the program.
How to apply for the ISRO YUVIKA program online?
ISRO releases a notification for the YUVIKA program on its official website. Students interested in applying must visit the ISRO website and fill out the online registration form within the stipulated time. The registration process usually invloves filling in basic details, academic information, and other required information. During the application process, students are required to upload relevant certificates and documents that supports their academic achievements, extracurricular activities and participation in competitions.
ISRO prepares merit list based on the details provided by the students in their applications. This merit list is created according to the weightage given to different criteria. A certain number of students are selected from each state, and additional reservations are made for SC / ST / OBC / EWS and rural students. Once selected, students are notified via email and the official website.
